Fair Trade – An Outline

How do you feel about the Fair Trade movement?

The present economic crisis has surely illustrated how, in these days of the world economy, there is an economic interdependence between all people, all over the globe. Furthermore, the international issues raised by global warming illustrate a similar trans-global interdependence in safeguarding the long term well-being of people.

There seems no doubt that the buying choices that we make in our local shops can have a very real impact on the livelihoods and living conditions of people in places that are many thousands of miles away, and it is this interdependence that has led to the fair trade movement.

Coffee and Fair Trade

A growing number of coffee lovers are considering how their favorite beverage is produced before they drink it. As environmental concerns increase internationally, many enthusiasts choose to purchase products with fair trade labeling. These sales worldwide last year totaled $3.62 billion dollars with coffee suppliers appreciating profits from the green market.

When coffee has fair trade certification, it guarantees just prices and ethical buying. It prevents slave and child labor, encourages conservation and protection of the environment and ensures a just price to cover production costs. Other trading principles adhered to include a safe workplace, the right to form unions and abiding by the United Nations human rights charter. There are many products besides coffee with fair trade certification including honey, cotton, rice, spices, banana, cocoa and wine.

Carbon Footprint Versus Fair Trade

For those of you unfamiliar with the term “carbon footprint” and its implications or are unsure what is meant by “fair-trade” here is a brief explanation.

Carbon footprint is defined by the UK carbon trust as being: ” ..the total set of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions caused directly or indirectly by an individual organization, event or product.” In the context of this article it applies specifically to carbon emissions given out by various transport modes during their endeavors to deliver commodities from A to B.
